Run for artists, designers and academics, the Whitby Conference is an intimate, friendly but high profile event like no other. It truly is “the biggest small Art & Design conference” and this unique event attracts the most eminent professional speakers internationally - past luminaries include Sir Peter Blake, Sir Christopher Frayling, Stephen Hitchin, Michael Johnson and Hilary Spurling amongst many others.

In 2008 we are again privileged to have speakers at the top of their professions sharing their experiences, work and ideas. The conference provides plenty of opportunities to network and socialise with the speakers, and with delegates from a wide spectrum of art and design disciplines. All in all the conference provides an excellent opportunity for personal development and inspiration for lecturers, design professionals and colleagues in the art community.

And don’t forget, the conference is held in Whitby with its fascinating history and connections with Captain Cook, Whitby jet, Count Dracula and the mysterious ‘hand of glory’! In previous years many conference delegates have seized the opportunity to make the most of their visit by making a weekend of it on the spectacular North Yorkshire coast!

Finally, we look forward to welcoming you at the event. All the information you need is set out on this webpage but if we’ve missed some vital details you need don’t hesitate to contact us.

Richard Seymour, co-founder of Seymour-Powell, is inarguably one of the world's most influential product designers. Based in London, Richard has been instrumental in creating some of the most iconic products of the last 25 years from household consumer goods to motorcycles. More recently, Seymour-Powell has been involved in the development of the Virgin Galactic privateer spacecraft!

Richard holds the D&AD Presidents Award for Outstanding Contribution to Design, is a recipient of an Honorary Doctorate from the Centre for Creative Studies, Michigan and is a Senior Fellow of the Royal College of Art.

Ever since his first work for Factory Records in the 1970s, Peter Saville has been a key figure in the graphic design world. After Factory, Peter moved to Virgin offshoot, Dindisc and shortly afterwards formed Peter Saville Associates, adding art and fashion clients to his music industry base. After a brief spell at Pentagram, and then in the USA, he returned to London to open The Apartment. Working with his long-term collaborator, photographer Nick Knight, he launched the website SHOWstudio.com. Since then he has been partnering a team of independent designers and creative consultants, handling projects for Alexander McQueen, EMI, Yohji Yamamoto and Christian Dior amongst many others. Peter has been honoured with recent retrospectives of his work at Manchester’s Urbis Centre and The Design Museum in London. In March 2004, he was appointed Creative Director for Manchester.

Pat Schleger was married to Hans Schleger and is herself a graphic designer. She worked with Hans for twenty-five years, and has compiled and designed a definitive selection of his work.

Hans Schleger needs no introduction to the design community. A champion of modernism, he pioneered the concept of corporate identity and his work has been hugely influential for subsequent generations of designers. In the mid 1920's he went to New York and was one of a handful of European emigré artists and designers who brought the 'Modernist' approach to American advertising. Returning to Berlin in 1929, he worked for the English advertising agency Crawfords as Art Director, emigrating to England after Hitler came to power. He worked in London until his death in 1976.

Pat's book 'Zero: Hans Schleger-A Life in Design' is the first and only comprehensive survey of Hans Schleger's work, and includes drawing, painting and photography as well as the graphic-design work for which he was best known: posters, symbols, advertising and corporate design and packaging.

Multimedia artist, Mills is known primarily for his influential, award-winning book and album covers for Brian Eno, Samuel Beckett, Nine Inch Nails, Michael Brook, Bill Laswell, Ian McEwan, David Sylvian, Michael Nyman, Harold Budd, Peter Gabriel and Milan Kundera, amongst many others. He has exhibited internationally and since the early 80s has created numerous site-specific, contextually anchored multi-media installations in the UK, New York, Tokyo, Dublin, Siena and Oporto. Royal Academy-trained painter, Jake Attree, has his studio at Dean Clough in Halifax and lives in the World Heritage village of Saltaire, both sites uniting refurbished textile mills with innovative concepts of creativity.

Jake draws continually and builds paintings from these drawings. The subject is of enormous importance to him but, paradoxically perhaps, Jake says the subject “is no more than a pretext to make the painting”. This sense of the painting as an object in its own right rather than solely a representation of the subject, declares a correspondence with all other design-based objects.

Jake is represented by Hart Gallery in Islington, where he has a major exhibition next year and has also exhibited widely both nationally and internationally. His exhibition “Marks on a White Ground” is currently on show at Dean Clough.

Playing a special set for us this year is renowned musician Steve Phillips.
One of the rare British artists to feature in the Guinness 'Who's Who of Blues', Steve Phillips is described as ''an obvious talent''.
Inspired by legendary blues men such as Robert Johnson, Blind Blake, Big Bill Broonzy and Lonnie Johnson, Steve embarked on a long, self-tutored course in the intricate art of Country Blues and Folk guitar playing.
A leading member of the 'Notting Hillbillies', and regular guest musician with 'The Mark Knopfler Band', Steve continues to tour regularly with Brendan Croker and perform as a soloist playing some of the very best in country blues, swing and more.
